Portable system to measure the evoked auditive potencials in cetaceans

In light of the increasing demand for information about the auditory sensitivity of cetaceans and the absolute necessity of diagnosing the possible auditory loss of stranded or rehabilitated animals, the LAB, MAREXI, and SARTI (Centre of Technological Development of Remote Acquisition and Data processing Systems, UPC) have developed, and are improving, an audiogram measurement system adapted to cetaceans. Among its most innovating features are:

  • Fast measurement based on generating multi-tonal signals, and the consequent possibility to measure the sensitivity for various frequencies with only one stimulus.
  • Portability. The system is light, allowing to work outside and has an electrical autonomy of a few hours.
  • Wide band. The acoustic wave generator allows producing stimuli from 10 Hz up to 200 kHz, which covers the auditory band of both humans and cetaceans, superior to the human band by a decade.
